01 The land

Madhuvan — the honey grove. A farm run by the family that lives on it.

Madhuvan Farm sits on the Ranipura–Lotna road at Ranipura (Samlaya), beside the Dwarkapura canal. The land is worked right through the year: rows of young coconut palms are coming up across the main field, papaya and mango are established nearer the house, and seasonal crops go in on the open ground between them.

Most of the field is laid out in ridges and furrows and watered through a network of buried pipe, so each block can be irrigated on its own as the crop in it needs. Beds are hand-weeded and hand-sprayed, row by row.

It is an ordinary working farm rather than a show farm — the photographs on this page are the fields as they actually are, in the monsoon and in the dry months.

02 What grows here

Across the field

  • Coconut

A young plantation across the main field, still filling in. The palms are set out on a wide grid, which leaves room to crop between the rows while they come to bearing age.

  • Papaya & mango

Established papaya and mango closer to the house and along the boundary, where they get shelter from the open field.

  • Seasonal field crops

The ground between the palms is cropped through the season on raised ridge-and-furrow beds, changing with the month and the water.

Long raised ridge-and-furrow beds with young creeping plants, running away toward the far boundary of the farm.
